SUPER REAL ISSUE 3 RECOMMENDED AT PAPERBACKREADER.COM!

Another great review, this time Dan Head makes Super Real issue 3 his recommended title in this week's COMICS YOU SHOULD BE READING column on PaperbackReader.com

From the review:
"By far and away, my favorite thing about this title is that it makes fun of so many pop culture clichés even as it wallows in why they're enjoyable.

I'd recommend it to readers who like smart comics that don't take themselves too seriously. And to readers who like sex. Personally, I think that encompasses just about everybody."

SUPER REAL ISSUE 3 REVIEWED IN THE COMICSWAITINGROOM.COM!

The fourth review turned in on our latest issue is another favorable one! This time former MoviePoopShoot.com (now QuickStopEntertainment.com) comic book reviewer Marc Mason talks about issue 3 over on his website ComicsWaitingRoom.com

From the review:
"Martin’s “reality TV meets comics” series sort of settles in to a comfort zone with issue three. The previous two issues focused more on introducing the parody elements to the story and establishing the characters. Now, with his pieces on the board, the creator can show exactly how the characters’ powers work, how they’re going to interact as a “team”, and in moving the story forward a bit."

SUPER REAL ISSUE 3 REVIEWED ON NEWSARAMA.COM!

Our latest issue is reviewed in the YOUR INDY WEEKLY column on the industries biggest website, Newsarama.com!

Super Real issue 3 gets 3 and 1/2 stars out of four!

"Overall, Super Real continues its journey as being a must read superhero indy and as we watch these five ‘contestants’ dealing with their new powers while being overseen by the most powerful men in America, we all know that sooner or later this is all going to come to a head. It’s the journey getting there that makes it fun and Martin has no problem bringing the excitement to each and every Super Real book."

PRESS RELEASE: SUPER REAL GETS ANIMATED @ SDCC!

Super Real Graphics.com will be unveiling an all new flash animation trailer for it’s comic book, Super Real, at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con International. The movie style trailer will bring the concept of the book to life for all to see at the Super Real table in the small press pavilion (space S 16)! I’m really excited to give an opportunity to easily see what the book has to offer!” Super Real Graphics.com will also be selling a limited edition preview book of upcoming titles exclusively at the show.

Newsarama.com

TheFourthRail.com
ComicBookReview.net 4 out of 5 stars
"Again, Jason has really knocked things out of the ball park in terms of a professional and enjoyable story. You should really give this series a try."

WONDERCON THIS WEEKEND!
NEW - 2006 SKETCHBOOK!

WONDERCON 2006
I'm very excited to exhibit at my first ever WONDERCON convention, not only to meet and see thousands of bay area comic fans, or because I haven't been to San Francisco in many years, but also because it's put on by the fine folks at Comic-Con International, the same group that organizes the industry's biggest and best con, San Diego Comic-Con!

WONDERCON is at San Francisco's Moscone Center West on Friday 2/10 thru Sunday 2/12
Super Real will be set up in the Small Press section - table SP1. We'll have all three covers for issue one, a preview of issue two (due out in a few short weeks), and the all new 2006 Super Real Sketchbook!

The 2006 SUPER REAL SKETCHBOOK
Last year I printed up a handful of Super Real sketchbooks, with never before available production art and sketches from the series, and they were a big hit, selling out after only 2 shows. So, this year I've created a new sketchbook with more never before seen artwork, including cover designs, guest pin ups and much more (they've even got a blank page for a hand sketch)!

Limited to 50 copies, include 25 black and white over-sized pages, and sell for $10ea.
They will debut at Wondercon, and then be available online and at this years cons.

A little something extra for the series enthusiast, and offered at a fair price.

"Looking for the next up and coming superstar artist in the industry? Allow me to introduce you to Jason Martin."

"To borrow and slightly paraphrase a line from one of my favorite episodes of “Seinfeld” - Super Real #1? It’s real…and it’s spectacular!"

SUPER REAL FEATURED/REVIEWED ON NEWSARAMA.COM!

Not only is Super Real number 1 featured on the YOUR INDY WEEKLY column on NEWSARAMA.com today, but columnist Ryan McLelland raves about the book!

From the feature:

"Super Real #1 does well to carve a niche in the rarely seen market of superhero indy comic books. It certainly is a book for those who love superheroes but want to get away from those everyday Marvel/DC archetypes. Throw in a beautiful variant cover by Dead@17’s Josh Howard and my lone gripe about this first issue can only be that I want issue two. Like NOW! One can only hope that Super Real will be an indy comic book staple for years to come."

PRESS RELEASE - Super Real number one gives you more!

Already offering full color, and over 30 pages of story, the first issue of Super Real will now also include a poster pull-out section featuring the variant cover artwork by Josh Howard (Dead@17, Black Harvest), as well as a full page interview with the Wizard Indie Artist of the Year.

Super Real, the self-published debut from creator Jason Martin, kicks off this November in comic shops everywhere, and is currently open for order through the September edition of Diamond Previews. It was always the publisher’s intent to offer customers and retailers the most value possible for their dollar, which is why printing in color, and with a higher page-count story were always a priority. It just so happens, that through some good fortune with printer negotiations, SueprRealGraphics.com can now offer this additional 4 page feature at no extra cost. Now every copy of the book, whether it’s the regular cover by Jason Martin, or the variant cover by Josh Howard, will contain the variant artwork as an over-sized mid-section extra!

SUPER REAL FEATURED IN BLUEWING MAGAZINE!

The Saga of BlueWing Magazine is the official fanzine of sagaofbluewing.com, and it's just been released through comiXpress. Inside, it features a kick-ass interview with the creator of Super Real, me!

Okay, that part about it being kick-ass could easily be hype, cause it's like about me, but really, it's kick-ass cause the interview was a blast, and the folks at BlueWing snuck in a bunch of artwork from my book (plus they also let me go into details about the series, not publicly discussed before!). The magazine also features Frank Dirscherl's The Wraith (the movie, the novel, the comic), info on the upcoming Bluewing comic series, and much more.

SUPER REAL REVIEWED BY THEFOURTHRAIL.COM

The latest review to come in from advance copies of issue one is from none other than Randy Lander of the4thRail.com!

The 4th Rail are comics top review site, and Randy had some very nice things to say about SUPER REAL. Check them out here:
thefourthrail.com (just scroll down)

Highlights include:
While I experienced no small amount of disappointment reading most of this week's crop of indy superheroes, Super Real #1 was an unexpected bright spot.
and
What will probably make most sit up and notice Super Real, though, is the artwork. If there's one common element found in self-published work, it's that ready for primetime artwork is a rarity, but Martin springs onto the scene almost fully formed, with an art style that will find a lot of favor with those who dig on guest cover artist Josh Howard.

Good stuff!

SUPER REAL REVIEWED ON BROKEN FRONTIER.COM!

Another advanced review is in on issue number 1, and this time it's from the fine folks at BrokenFrontier.com

Neil Figuracion writes:
"The main cast are all fairly distinct. We don’t necessarily know the characters just yet, but they do seem intriguing.
The art has an angular, relaxed feel. It’s almost like cartoon characters over the pixellated backgrounds of the first Tomb Raider game, or like Aeon Flux...
...Super Real could be entertaining for a season or two."

Overall the review is favorable, but they do have some concerns, all of which I feel will be adequately addressed in future issues!

SUPER REAL REVIEWED ON COMICS #1 NEWS SITE, NEWSARAMA!

As mentioned before, the first double-sized issue of Super Real is complete, and work on distribution has now begun. In an effort to maximize the release, which is brutal on any publisher, especially a small press self-publisher such as myself, I've begun to send the book out to the comic industry review community, hopefully obtaining some good words to help the launch.

The latest review in on the first issue is from Troy Brownfield of Newsarama's Best Shots weekly review round up.

Taken from the review:
"Overall, Super Real is a fun read. The 44-page first issue looks primed to strike a chord with disenchanted MTV watchers or those in search of a kicky comedy. This certainly holds promise for at least a limited series; with so many books going to ?Seasons? now (like Sleeper and Hard Time), it might be appropriate for Martin to do a whole string of minis, rotating casts and cities and powers each time. At any rate, this is a fine start."

SUPER REAL FEATURED ON COMICSTRIPFAN.COM!

I was recently contacted by Eric Agena who runs ComicStripFan.com, it seems he's a new fan of the Super Real webcomic, and he wanted to add it to the series featured on his site. I of course, was happy to oblige, especially once I saw how detailed and extensive his site was. It's really a great place for not only comic book fans, but comic strip and webcomic lovers too. Eric has compiled tons of original art and commisioned art from a wide variety of all forms of comics. It's amazing, and ever growing. I'm very pleased to be a part of it!

If you have a look at his Super Real page you'll see the orginal art he purchased from the first issue, a panel of Shana, along with the thumbnails, notes, and roughs that led up to it. Neat. Also, he's got some other unique items he obtained from me, such as the commisioned piece, Super Real girls go Hawaii!

Thanks again Eric!

SUPER REAL REVIEWED ON MOVIE POOP SHOOT.COM!

I recently sent out some advance copies of the completed first issue of Super Real to online reviewers and industry folk, to get a feel for the response to the book. This time the review is in today’s Should It Be A Movie review column on MoviePoopShoot.com by Marc Mason.

Highlights include:
"His semi-manga look and style plays well with the story he’s trying to tell."
"I enjoyed this book, and I think it can find an audience and succeed and grow. Grade: B"

SUPER REAL REVIEWED ON COMIC BOOK RESOURCES.CC!

I recently sent out some advance copies of the completed first issue of Super Real to online reviewers and industry folk, to get a feel for the response to the book. The first result is in, a review in today’s Permanent Damage column on CBR.cc by Steven Grant.

To be honest, it wasn’t the best review. Not bad, but nothing in the book particularly moved Steven. That’s okay. Everyone is different, and opinions vary. Some rays of light, such as him commenting the writing was okay, which coming from a professional comic book writer (especially one as notoriously vocal about the comic writing craft), is something. His main fault was in the art, something I’m continually striving to improve (I’m just learning Photoshop, and hadn’t drawn on a regular basis in decades), and also something that because of my choices in style, may not appeal to everyone.

I did find it funny that he mentions, the book is “seemingly heavily influenced by the Keith Giffen/Marc DeMatteis version of JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA.” A book I’ve never read. So hey, apparently if you like that book, Super Real is right up your alley!

WIZARD WORLD LA PICS!

Here are the pics from the big LA con.

Here we have the Friday lineup, 2 hours before the show, and then more lines inside...

This is the show floor as you come through the main entrance (before opening)...

The con even made the front page of the Saturday paper, along with our friends at Arcana comics... and on the right is a pic of the show guide...
This is the artist alley, where Super Real could be found...

The Super Real 1/2 table (Wizard cons are spendy for space)... and here are the stack of 25 WWLA Super Real preview 3 SKETCH COVERS (which nearly sold out!)...

Here we have my good friend Javier Hernandez, creator of El Muerto (pictured left)... and my neighbor at this show, Todd Nauck, industry vet artist, and creator of fellow reality TV comic book, Wildgaurd (pictured right)...

My other neighbor for the con, movie poster artist turned pin up artist, Don Pace... a chick with the Saw (movie) contraption on her head... and Jonah Weiland CBR.com guru, and webmaster supreme (Super Real's web host)... and yes, I informed him he was missing the word "Real" on his t-shirt...

A bad pic of the Whedon/Serenity team signing (they were located just across from us), if you squint really hard you can make out Joss collapsing after security clears the crowd... interesting side note: if you squint hard at the left of the pic, you can make out the man in the Steelers jersey, it's Tim Bradstreet, cover artist. He was located one aisle over, and he looks amazingly like James Gandolfini (Tony Sopprano)...

TUNE IN TOMORROW FOR MY FULL CON/TRIP LOG, AND FIND OUT WHAT IT'S LIKE TO SET UP AT ONE OF THE BIG SHOWS...

EMERALD CITY COMIC CON REPORT!

Well another con has come and gone, and it was another success, on many levels. The ECCC itself was a great success, it continues to build on each previous year, with this version featuring even more big name guest talent, a bigger floor, and about double the attendance. I've heard a reported 6,000 fans attended, pretty big numbers for a NW show. The only thing about the show I'd say was a let down, was the Super Bowl Sunday timing, it's just not a good day to try and have an event.

As for Super Real, we had one of the first booths as you came in the doors, and a big one at that, take a look:

We sold out of the limited edition color and sketch cover versions of the show exclusive, and moved quite a few copies all told. Don't forget you can always pick up con preview books in the BOOKS section of the site.

As always, I also got to meet and talk to some great folks both on the inside and fan side of the industry. There may even be some developments coming from that, I'll be sure and share if they do.

One of the main features of the con, that can't go unmentioned for a variety of reasons, was the first con appearance in years of goth guru and indy comics legend turned animation mogul, Jhonen Vasquez. Jhonen drew huge lines all weekend, and had fans travel from across country to see him. My wife is indeed a big fan of his, though according to her, "not the kind of fan to wait on line for an autograph", but apparently the kind of fan that lurks by the booth and snaps photos!

Tami Martin reconnaissance photos (wife not pictured).

I also picked up some cool swag at the show, so check out the LINKS section for some of that.

For more cool con coverage, pop on over to CBR.

See you in Portland, or Long Beach!

EMERALD CITY COMIC CON THIS WEEKEND!

The biggest show in the NW returns in an all new venue as a 2 day event, and SUPER REAL will be in the exhibitors area at booth number 712! Come on by the Qwest Field Events Center in beautiful downtown Seattle, WA this Saturday and Sunday (2/05-06/05)!

As has become standard practice for all big show appearances, there's an all new preview book, just for the ECCC. The special preview of issue one this time clocks in at 28 pages, with the entire first and fourth parts of the story ,and character bios (with all new, in uniform, art). This is the most limited printing yet, as I've tried out the new ComixPress online, print on demand service with fabulous results!

ECCC Preview book ComixPress.com cover.

Since the books were made with POD technology, I was able to do six different covers for the show! One for each character, and a blank "sketch" cover. If you can't make the show, the book will be available through ComixPress.com, you can find out more in the books section of the site, here.

Hope to see you at the show!

Next stop, Portland, March 6th.

ISSUE ONE VARIANT COVER!!

Super Real Graphics couldn’t be more proud to announce our first “official” variant cover artist, none other than the red hot Dead@17 creator, Josh Howard!

With the upcoming debut of the Super Real graphic series to comic book format, one of our goals was to line up top talent for a series of variant cover art. Josh was kind enough to sign up for issue one, and has done us proud with his version of our main character Holly Hood (aka participant #1).

Take a look at a sample of the art for his cover, and watch for it soon in stores near you!

Not final image.

Josh regularly creates some of the best small press covers in the game with his two runs on Viper Comics Dead@17, and works in a really hip/fun style that’s a perfect fit for the book! A really big thanks go out to Josh!

GENERAL UPDATE!

Just getting done with last weekends Portland Comic Convention, the highlight of which was seeing all the aspiring local creators I've met over the last year or so. The lowlight was selling 8 short boxes of miscellaneous comics to raise cash, thus keeping me behind the table all day, and missing out on seeing more people and cool stuff! But hey, whatever it takes to make the book a reality!!

One of the cool local creators, Riley, was even cool enough to surprise me with this quick sketch of Kityana (aka participant #3). Here's the pic...

It seems Kityana gets the most attention both in gallery hits on the site, and in fan/art/attention! Fitting since her character is a model in the series. I plan to get a section in the gallery for fan art soon, so all you aspiring artists out there don't be shy, send me some stuff with my characters!

Production of the first issue continues to close in on completion, and along with it, many exciting developments. If all goes as planned, I should have some of those big announcements I've been teasing about for a while, within the next few weeks. So as always...

Graphic Smash is the action/adventure sister site to ModernTales.com, and they are the number two and number one subscription based webcomic sites on the web respectively. Super Real will be featured on Graphic Smash as the exclusive home for online webcomic content, in addition to being available in print form in the near future.

So whether you prefer your comics in-hand or on-screen, Super Real has you covered!

Feel free to join me in this exciting new endeavor, and check it out here:
